Here’s some great news for anyone inspired by the Dancing on Ice TV series – Essex is about to get it second permanent ice rink.

Romford ice rink

The county’s first ice rink, at Riverside Ice and Leisure in Chelmsford, will be joined in 2018 by Sapphire Ice and Leisure in Romford, a £25m complex that is being built on Western Road. The centre will also have a gym, two swimming pools, dance studios, and two cafes.

With a capacity for over 1,200 skaters, the rink will measure 56m x 26m and will be home to the Romford Raiders ice hockey team, who visitors can watch at the weekend.

The new rink will be a big boost for locals, who lost the old Romford ice rink when it closed down in 2013.

As well as casual sessions, visitors of all ages will be able to attend award-winning skating lessons by Skate UK. The NISAs flagship programme can teach a full range of fundamental movements and basic skills over 7 levels.

When will the Romford ice rink open?

Originally scheduled to open in April 2018, the complex is now expected to open its doors to visitors ahead of schedule in February.
