Property developer Intu have announced plans to build a Nickelodeon theme park at the Lakeside shopping centre in West Thurrock.
The new multi-million pound theme park will bring to life popular children’s shows, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, PAW Patrol, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The attraction is to be park of huge £95 million investment in the intu retail venue, and is expected to open to the public in 2018.
Nickelodeon theme park plans
In a first look at the suggested plans for Lakeside, the Thurrock Gazette revealed that the theme park will be built next to the existing Vue cinema. The park will feature a variety of adventure zones and attractions, a dedicated space for the younger children, and themed rooms for parties.
Intu, which owns Lakeside, signed the deal with leisure park operator Parques Reunidos, and Nickelodeon owners, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN).
Fernando Eiroa, CEO of Parques Reunidos, said: “Shopping centres have evolved into spaces where families spend time together and Parques Reunidos shares intu’s vision of transforming the experiences lived in these centres to make them into wonderful memories.
“Therefore, we are delighted to continue working with Nickelodeon, whose characters will provide the perfect magical environment.”
Marc Myers, manager at Lakeside, commented: “It’s fabulous news for us and fantastic news for all of Thurrock and the whole area.
“This is a huge first step in creating a whole leisure experience at Intu Lakeside. The whole shop – ping industry has changed and what we have got to do is make sure that our destination always changes. It has to be more than just shops, and that’s what we have been moving towards over the last couple of years.”
