Getting fit when you’ve just had a baby is something which most new mums think about in the weeks after giving birth, especially as women typically gain as much as 20% of their body weight while pregnant. But it’s not always easy to exercise when you’ve got a small child to look after. Thankfully, though, there are some great fitness activities in Essex which you can do with your little one in tow. So, when you’re feeling ready to start exercising after giving birth and you’ve had the all clear from your GP, here are the best ways to keep fit with your new baby.

Head to the pool

It’s a great idea to get little ones used to the water from an early age and there’s no better way to do that than to hit your local pool. Swimming is a great exercise for new mums too as it’s gentle and relaxing on the body, yet still provides an all over workout. Be sure to take a friend or family member along with you and once you’ve enjoyed some time in the baby pool, hit the main pool on your own and complete some laps to really reap the benefits that the water has to offer.

Enjoy a long stroll

Walking is the perfect postpartum exercise which you can do with your newborn as it can be done anywhere at any time and doesn’t cost a penny. Essex has some beautiful places to walk around, including Dedham Vale and Epping Forest, alternatively, your local park is the perfect place to enjoy a stroll too. What’s even better is that pushing a pram or walking while holding your baby in a carrier burns more calories than walking on your own does. Combining frequent activity with nutritious foods is the best way to optimise your performance when walking, keep your energy levels and to achieve the best results.

Join a specialist class

There are a variety of classes held across Essex designed especially for mothers and babies. If you’re keen on stretching your muscles in a calm environment then consider enrolling in a yoga or Pilates class for the two of you. Moreover, there are several buggy fitness classes throughout the county where parents and babies meet with their buggies and sweat it out together. At times when you want to solely focus on your workout without having to worry about your child, head to a fitness class or to a gym which provides childcare in the form of a creche.

As a new mum, it’s important to get fit and healthy and the best way to do this is to include your baby in your new fitness routine. Swimming is a great activity which both you and your and baby can enjoy together, while, walking will work multiple muscles in your body and help to keep you active. It’s also a good idea to try out specialised mother and baby fitness classes as they’re practical and you’ll find an abundance of them in Essex.
