When you’re a parent, getting enough sleep in one heck of a challenge. That’s why a major gym chain have begun to trial a new fitness class that consists of nothing but SLEEPING!

David Lloyd Clubs, which have several sites in Essex, has created ‘Napercise’ classes that involve climbing into bed and getting a much-needed 45 minute snooze.

The sleep sessions are designed to reinvigorate the mind, improve moods and maybe even burn a calorie or two. Unlike traditional exercises classes, the only goal here is total relaxation.

New research carried out by David Lloyd Clubs found that the UK is in the grip of a ‘tiredness epidemic’. A huge 86% of parents admitted to suffering from fatigue, while 26% said they are regularly getting less than 5 hours sleep a night.

During a Napercise class, exercise machinery and loud music are replaced by comfy single beds and soft atmospheric sounds. The temperature is the studio is also dropped to a level that promotes maximum calorie burning during sleep.

The additional mid-day sleep, coupled with regular daily exercise, could have a big impact on parents’ overall mood and long-term health.

Kathryn Pinkham, a Dreams Sleep Expert who collaborated with David Lloyd on the research, commented: Sleep is a lot more important than people realise. We tend to focus on the short-term effects such as being tired or lacking concentration, but it is also essential for our long-term physical and mental wellbeing too.

“In addition to a lack of sleep bringing with it a higher risk of developing anxiety or depression, when we are sleep deprived we lack the energy to exercise regularly, and also the mental clarity to make good decisions about the food we eat, which could negatively impact our physical health in the long-run.”

David Lloyd Clubs’ crèche facilities mean that better sleep could now be in reach for those parents who can afford the monthly fees.

The rest of us, however, will just have to carry on power-napping at our desks and in the front of the TV.
