Pregnant and desperate to get away from it all? Our travel reviewer Laura Mason takes her growing baby bump for a special treat at Hoar Cross Hall spa hotel.
Pregnancy tends to bring on the very worst in my body, I am not sure if anyone else can relate but there are parts of my body that ache and tense that I didn’t even know existed! While my husband provides the odd offering to give my sore feet a rub, I’m never quite sure if he’s doing more harm than good!
So having gotten a hectic Christmas out the way combined with entering my third trimester, I decided a little me-time, along with my mother, were in order and booked us in for a day of r’n’r at Hoar Cross Hall. Hoar Cross Hall is a spa hotel based in the quintessential Staffordshire countryside. It doubles up as a day spa so, where timing and finances may not be so generous, you can indulge for just a day instead.
I had selected Hoar Cross on this occasion as I had heard they have just introduced a brand new mother to be treatment by a brand I recently experienced, Little Butterfly, and if it’s half as good as the beautiful products then I knew it would just what I needed.
Arriving at Hoar Cross Hall on a wintry morning, the Day Spa is a haven of relaxation. We quickly changed into our swimsuits and popped on our roles to explore the spa like excitable children. With so much on offer, it’s hard knowing where to start – there are two large spa swimming pools, a number of saunas and steam rooms and water therapies to mix things up. If you prefer just to sit back and clear your mind, there’s plenty of poolside loungers or the relaxation rooms allow you to get in touch with your inner zen.
Those all-important extras
Dare I say it, but if you are looking to broaden your health and wellbeing offer then the fully equipped gym is bursting with the latest equipment, and there’s a daily full schedule of exercise and relaxation classes, although I must admit they weren’t high on my priority list. In the more pleasant weather you can even explore more of the great outdoors with bike hire or take a leisurely walk around the grounds.
Extras that make it even more special are the restaurant and café, both fantastic for healthy and indulgent snacks and meals. A day visit comes inclusive with a three-course lunch at the Seventh Heaven Restaurant allowing you to refuel.
The Little Butterfly Mother to Be Treatment
However, the highlight for me had to be the treatment. It’s a shame to visit and not include a treatment with so much on offer and if your time is so busy like mine then it’s worth taking up the rare opportunity.
The Little Butterfly Mother to Be Treatment is an indulgent 85 minutes of sheer bliss. My masseuse very kindly sat down with me to discuss my pregnancy to establish any concerns and level of comfort before I climbed onto the bed on my side and she gently massaged my body from side to side using the Little Butterfly Mother and Baby Oil. Using your desired pressure, it’s a delicate aromatherapy massage that doesn’t overwork any tensions but instead lulls you with a soothing and calm full body massage that aims to relive those better-known areas of strain.
The time seemed to pass me by much more quickly than I had hoped but as I awoke from my semi-conscious state and sat up, I genuinely felt I had a little something of myself back. My body reminded me of being my own, felt soft, smelt nice and I even walked out with a little spring in my step.
A nice touch is that you are gifted with the remainder of the bottle of Little Butterfly product to take home, so if you dare let your partner free on a massage it’s perfect, or alternatively it’s safe to use on your newborn so makes a great product for baby massage.
The saddest part of the day was our departure; the impact of one day seemed to take me back to the more ‘energised’ phase of my pregnancy, so I would love to see how any extended period of time would benefit my ailing body and mind. If time allows, I’d definitely recommend a longer stay.
Prices for a day visit on the Simply Spa Package at Hoar Cross Hall start from £89pp midweek and £109pp weekends and include full use of facilities and lunch. The Little Butterfly Mother to Be Treatment costs £85. For further details visit www.hoarcross.co.uk.
